Steve Rubie,
The 606 Club, Chelsea.
Born in Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland, Eileen grew up in a family steeped in traditional music. Her grandfather Charlie Hunter was a well-known fiddler, her father was twice Scottish Accordion Champion and one of Scotlands most celebrated players. Even her brother, Russell is a popular fiddler and pianist. All have written and published tunes. It was no surprise that like her older brothers, Eileen began playing the old upright piano in the living room at the tender age of six.
Although she had always sung for pleasure she did not take it up seriously until she was a music student at the Northern College in Aberdeen at the age of 18. She went on to gain her LGSM performer's diploma on flute and a B.Ed (Mus) with Honours, after which she was offered a music teaching job in St Machar Academy where she stayed for five years.
While her classical education continued at school and at college, she was playing piano in her father's Lorne Scottish Dance Band at home and on tour with him to Europe, South America and Africa. About this time she began to develop as a jazz singer
In 1997 Eileen left her home town to focus on her singing. She studied jazz as a post graduate at the Leeds College of Music supporting her studies by teaching and gigging with her jazz band.
The band was extremely popular and very soon they found themselves performing on BBC 1's Chldren in Need. Eileen also performed as the vocalist with the Phoenix Dance Company on their 1999 UK tour.
When Eileen was offered work with a touring theatre company in 2000 she decided to move to London. She went on to sing as a soloist in many concerts in some of the country's most prestigious venues including the Savoy Theatre, The Royal Albert Hall and Chichester Cathedral with Her Magesty's Band of the Royal Marines. She continued to tour with musical theatre productions and for one season performed at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park. Throughout all this she retained her love of jazz and the freedom of expression that it brings.
In 2002 Eileen was unsure which direction her music should take. She was a classically trained flautist and pianist, a qualified teacher and a jazz singer but pursuing a career in theatre. One day while sitting in Starbucks Eileen met Steve Brookstein.
This chance meeting helped Eileen decide on the direction her music should take. After hearing her sing and play piano Steve convinced her to concentrate on her jazz. Within a year Eileen was gigging full time in hotels and bars and developing her own style.
Eileen and Steve began to write songs for her album. She was soon asked by Steve Jenkins to record a vocal on a compilation album for Jive Records which led to an offer of a development deal. However, three months later the troubled record label, BMG, pulled the plug on most of Jive's projects including Eileen's without hearing a single song.
In 2004 with Eileen and Steve now dating, Steve entered the X Factor and won! The album they had started writing was put on hold.
By 2006, Eileen was a regular at such jazz clubs as The 606 Club in Chelsea and Jazz at Pizza Express, Dean Street. She was also a newly wed, marrying Steve in August and then supporting him on a UK tour. Her album was being recorded with a release set for 2007. However, Eileen fell pregnant and in 2008, Steve and Eileen were blessed with their gorgeous little boy, Hamish.
In 2009 and Eileen is finished her long awaited debut album, 'I Miss The Sky' nearly 4 years late. - but it was well worth the wait. Steve decided to release it independently and had a small number pressed up. The first step was to send a copy to Mike Vitti, head of programming at Jazz FM in the hope that he would play the album on the radio station. The response was better than expected. Mike Vitti loved the album so much that he wanted Eileen on Jazz FM's new artist label and within weeks of Jazz FM hearing the album Eileen was signed.
The album is set for release in 21st June 2010.
